Cyber Wellness and Mental Health
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), including artificial intelligence, have become integral to how students learn, communicate and participate in society. While technology provides access to information, diverse perspectives and new opportunities for learning and collaboration, the rapidly evolving digital landscape also presents challenges such as misinformation, deepfakes, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, excessive technology use and other online harms.
Cyber Wellness is an important component of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). Grounded in values and Social-Emotional Competencies, it supports students in developing the knowledge, skills and dispositions to navigate digital spaces safely, respectfully and responsibly. It also strengthens their Emerging 21st Century Competencies, particularly Critical, Adaptive and Inventive Thinking and Communication, Collaboration and Information Skills. Students learn to evaluate online information critically, make responsible decisions, manage their digital well-being and use technology purposefully to create a positive impact.
The three key Cyber Wellness messages are:
Embrace the opportunities offered by technology while maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
Be a safe and responsible user of technology and maintain a positive online presence.
Take responsibility for one’s well-being and actions in cyberspace.
At Bendemeer Secondary School, Cyber Wellness education is delivered through CCE lessons, Student Development Experiences, school-wide programmes and relevant subject lessons. Students explore contemporary issues such as online safety, cyberbullying, digital footprints, misinformation, generative artificial intelligence, healthy technology habits and respectful online interactions. They are guided to exercise sound judgement, discern negative influences and seek help from trusted adults when they encounter concerns in the digital space.
Peer support is a key feature of our Cyber Wellness approach. Peer Support Leaders role-model responsible digital behaviour and promote a caring and supportive peer culture. Through peer-led conversations and activities, they encourage their classmates to make thoughtful online choices, look out for one another and contribute positively in both physical and digital spaces.
During Cyber Wellness Week, our Peer Support Leaders facilitate customised class activities and school-wide initiatives. These experiences provide students with opportunities to discuss current digital issues, reflect on their technology habits and take collective responsibility for creating a safer, kinder and more inclusive online community.
Partnership with parents is essential in helping students develop healthy and responsible digital habits. Parents who would like to learn more about Cyber Wellness may access the resources provided through the links below for practical guidance on managing online risks, supporting balanced technology use and engaging their children in meaningful conversations about their digital experiences.
