Our Learning Outcomes
At the Science Department, we believe that every child is unique, with his or her own passions, talents and aspirations. We seek to inspire our students to see Science not merely as a subject to be studied, but as a way of understanding the world, asking meaningful questions and creating solutions for the future.
Through our curriculum and learning experiences, we nurture students to become critical, adaptive and inventive thinkers who are inspired by Science, inquire like scientists and innovate using Science. We hope to develop students who are curious about the world around them and confident in using scientific knowledge to make responsible decisions and contribute to society.
Our Approach
The Science Department provides a strong foundation in scientific knowledge while creating meaningful opportunities for students to apply what they learn.
Our curriculum is designed to cater to students' diverse readiness, interests and learning needs. Through Inquiry-Based Learning, Collaborative Learning, Problem-Based Learning, STEAM integration, Hands-on and Experiential Learning, and Differentiated Instruction, students are encouraged to explore concepts deeply, ask questions and solve authentic problems.
Learning is further enriched through real-world contexts, particularly in areas such as sustainability, healthcare, engineering and environmental science. These experiences enable students to appreciate how Science connects with their everyday lives and the challenges facing our world.
Alongside scientific knowledge and skills, we seek to nurture values such as Resilience, Integrity, Curiosity and Responsibility, empowering students to become thoughtful and responsible users of Science and technology.
Our Signature Programmes and Activities
Our students engage in a variety of programmes designed to make Science meaningful, relevant and exciting.
Applied Learning Programme (ALP)
Our ALP integrates STEM and Sustainability, providing students with opportunities to apply scientific knowledge to real-world environmental challenges. Through hands-on investigations and problem-solving experiences, students explore how STEAM can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Science Enrichment Workshops
Science Integrative Activities & STEM Playground Challenge
STEAM Challenges & Sustainability Workshops
Talent Development Programme
Our Talent Development Programme provides students with opportunities to stretch their potential, pursue their scientific interests and engage with authentic scientific experiences. Beyond competitions, students are encouraged to explore how Science can be applied to address real-world challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.
(A) EcoSteward Programme
The EcoSteward Programme nurtures a group of environmentally conscious students who are passionate about sustainability and committed to making a positive impact in the school and wider community.
Through training, workshops, learning journeys and hands-on projects, our EcoStewards deepen their understanding of environmental science, sustainability and responsible resource management. They learn to examine environmental issues critically, propose practical solutions and take action to promote sustainable practices within the school community.
The programme also provides opportunities for students to develop their leadership, collaboration, communication and problem-solving skills as they work together to raise awareness and inspire others to care for the environment.
Through the EcoSteward experience, students learn that Science is not confined to the classroom—it can be a powerful tool for understanding environmental challenges, developing solutions and creating positive change.
(B) Competitions and Challenges
Students with a strong interest in Science and STEM are given opportunities to participate in competitions and training programmes, including:
Science Olympiads
International Biomedical Quiz
C. B Paul Science Quiz
GMAC Challenge
Live-On Essay Writing Competition
Temasek Polytechnic Engineering Olympiad
Illustratum@NUS
STEM Playground Challenge
SJI Mousetrap Car Challenge
These platforms challenge students to think deeply, apply their knowledge creatively and develop the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems.
(C) Science Learning Journeys
Students also gain first-hand exposure to scientific research and practice through learning journeys such as:
NUS Demo Lab
NUS Anatomy Lab
Mangrove Trail
STEMazing Workshop
Through these experiences, students encounter Science in authentic settings and gain a deeper appreciation of how scientific knowledge is generated and applied.
(D) Learning from Experts and Industry Partners
Our students benefit from talks, workshops and learning opportunities conducted by scientists, industry professionals and higher education partners. These include Polytechnic Applied Learning Modules (ApLM), as well as talks and workshops focusing on areas such as sustainability and energy.
Such partnerships broaden students' perspectives and help them discover the diverse possibilities of STEM-related pathways and careers.
Celebrating Our Students' Achievements
Our students have demonstrated their passion, perseverance and excellence through their participation in national competitions and external platforms.
