English Language and Literature
Discover how our English Language and Literature programme builds critical thinkers and confident communicators through engaging, collaborative learning.
Our Learning Outcomes
We seek to inspire an appreciation for the English Language and Literature, both in creative expression and in daily life, as we develop Emerging 21st century competencies in our students. Through the teaching and learning of these subjects, we nurture critical thinkers who can navigate and negotiate a diverse array of multimodal texts to communicate effectively in a complex world. In doing so, we aim to enable them to be empathetic and global thinkers, discerning and critical readers, creative inquirers, and convincing communicators.
Our Approach
The English Language and Literature Department combines the joy of learning with academic rigour by fostering multiliteracies, metacognition, and inquiry. Through experiential learning and guided discovery, students explore different aspects of language and connect with contemporary issues, broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the world. Visible thinking strategies are explicitly taught to enhance metacognition, while ICT opportunities enable students to co-construct knowledge collaboratively. The department draws on Collaborative Learning, Differentiated Instruction (DI), e-Pedagogy and the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model, anchored by the CLEARR Pedagogical Framework, a structured process of contextualising learning, exploring and applying knowledge, and reinforcing understanding.

Our Talent Development Programme
At Bendemeer Secondary School, every strength deserves a stage. The English Talent Development Programme (ETDP) gives students with a gift for language and communication a clear pathway to grow further. Here, talent is not just recognised. It is developed, tested and put to purpose.
The programme is anchored in our school's mission. It shapes students who are grounded in values, dare to aspire and lift one another up. Through real experiences, they learn to speak with confidence, lead with courage and serve with purpose. Along the way, they live out our C.A.R.E. values — Courage, Adaptability, Respect, Excellence.
